Quote of the Day

“I’m not an idiot. If Rupert Murdoch sat me down tomorrow and said, ‘We want to put you on the Fox network in primetime.’ … Well, I’m not stupid.”

Fired CNN host Piers Morgan.

Fox News — perhaps the one place in the world where Piers wouldn’t be the biggest a-hole in the building, not by a long shot.

Rebekah and Rupert and Lachlan and Andy

Gawker reports that emails involved in the upcoming British phone hacking trials will show that Rebekah Brooks slept with Rupert Murdoch, his son Lachlan, and Andy Coulson, her fellow News of the World editor who became David Cameron’s chief spokesman, but resigned in 2011 as the hacking scandal grew.

You’ll recall that the British press reported earlier this year that Cameron had been shocked by reports of an affair.  Supposedly, the Brooks-Coulson part of the story was that sex scandal.

For those of you keeping score at home, Rupert is 82, while Rebekah is 45, slightly older than his soon-to-be-ex Wendi Deng, who is 44.

Tony Blair Cause of Murdoch Divorce?

Much speculation that Rupert Murdoch’s divorcing of his wife Wendi is because she had an affair with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.  Blair is godfather to the Murdochs’ older daughter, Grace.

Tony’s not helping.  His spokesman issued a Clintonian denial that they “are” having an affair.  Notice lack of “never had” an affair.

Is this the affair that so shocked David Cameron and was supposed to be a threat to his governing agenda?  I don’t see why it would affect Cameron’s government.

Update — Blair’s spokesman is now saying there was never an affair.

The Next Mrs. Murdoch?

Is it just a coincidence that Rupert Murdoch announced he’s divorcing Wendi and Fox News announced that Sarah Palin is coming back on the same day?

Back at the beginning of the year, Roger Ailes offered to renew Palin’s contract but at a smidge of the $1 million a year she had been getting.  She stomped off in a huff in her cheesy red Naughty Monkeys and has now come crawling back, given that nothing else has turned up for her since (unless you count Bristol and Willow appearing on Joan and Melissa Rivers’ show).

I think this has just been a really long contract negotiation, one Ailes knew he would ultimately win.

I’d love to hear the tape of Palin begging.  Where the hell is the NSA when you need them?

That British Sex Scandal

It looks as if the two people in the British sex scandal that has David Cameron freaked out and that the Daily Mail has said it can’t name for legal reasons might be Cameron pal Rebekah Brooks and  former Cameron press secretary Andy Coulson, both awaiting trial in the Murdoch phone hacking scandal.

It would be embarrassing for Cameron, but for Brooks and Coulson, I think such a revelation would be the least of their problems.

Murdoch’s Rebekah Brooks Charged

Rebekah Brooks, former head of Rupert Murdoch’s News International, has been charged with perverting the course of justice (the British version of obstruction of justice) for trying to conceal evidence in the investigation of phone hacking and bribery of government officials.  Her husband Charlie and her personal assistant have been charged as well.

Not a happy day for her, obviously, but neither is it good for James and Rupert Murdoch or David Cameron.  Will she sing, or will she keep her mouth shut and be “rewarded” by the Murdochs?

This scandal is a lot of fun, but from my American perspective, it won’t be completely satisfying unless it reaches Fox News.

David Cameron Has Some Splaining To Do

Look, I know that these days the sun sets pretty early on the British Empire and that being Prime Minister is not as strenuous as it used to be when Brittania ruled the waves, but still, you have to wonder why David Cameron wouldn’t have something better to do than text Rebekah Brooks, the flame-haired former News International CEO, more than a dozen times a day, as the British papers are reporting.  Brooks is scheduled to testify before the Leveson Inquiry on Rupert Murdoch’s Evil Empire next week, and apparently she’s saved her voluminous texts and emails from Cameron.

If Cameron doesn’t have splaining to do to the British people, I suspect he might to his wife Samantha.
