Sochi Hypocrisy?

WaPo has an interesting story* pointing out that eight U. S. states have so-called “no homo promo” bans in their school curricula that are very much like Russia’s anti-gay laws.  These states — and I’m sure you already guessed some of them — are Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, Utah, and Oklahoma.

But I’m still not watching the Olympics because of the dog killing.  You spent $50 billion and you couldn’t build an animal shelter?

Go Figure

A new study, “Freedom in the 50 States,” done by George Mason University supposedly measures economic and personal freedoms and found North Dakota to be our freest state.

Um, tell that to someone who wants the personal freedom to have an abortion.

The next freest were South Dakota, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and Oklahoma.

The least free were New York, California, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Rhode Island.  I’ve been in California for the past thirty years and have always felt quite free here, thank you very much.

Anybody think lots of people are about to flee the oppression of Hawaii for balmy North Dakota?  Me either.

The Trust Fund Baby Ticket

GOP strategist Mary Matalin says that Janna Ryan, Paul’s wife, “lives a real middle class mother life.”

Janna Ryan may be a lovely person and a wonderful mother, but she is not “middle class.”  Middle class people don’t have income-producing trust funds (from oil) worth at least $1million and as much as $5 million.  She comes from a rich and politically prominent Oklahoma family.   They live in a mansion.

Paul Ryan was a rich kid who married another rich kid and now he is running with another couple of rich kids, Ann and Mitt.

Janna Ryan’s Family

The fact that Paul Ryan’s wife, Janna, is the niece of former Oklahoma Sen. David Boren, a Dem, is getting a lot of press.

We should also note that her grandfather, Reuel Little, started a third-party in Oklahoma in the 1960’s to get George Wallace on the ballot for president.  Maybe some white sheets among the dirty linen?

The Taliban Are Here

As part of the GOP’s war on women, Republican-controlled states (Oklahoma, Kansas, Arizona) have, or are moving towards, outrageous laws destroying the doctor-patient relationship.  These laws say that if a doctor withholds information about known birth defects in order to prevent you from having an abortion, you can’t sue him for malpractice!  So you can’t trust your own doctor to tell you what he knows about your pregnancy.  It’s none of your business!

Even though early tests are now available, if there’s devastating news, you won’t discover it in time to exercise your constitutional right to terminate, you’ll find out in the delivery room.  Surprise!  Who needs science, when we have religion?

We’re so busy fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan that we don’t seem to realize we have our own Taliban problem here at home.

Super Tuesday Predictions

Santorum has a 58% chance of winning Tennessee, with a 38% chance for Mitt.

Santorum has a 93% chance of winning Oklahoma (where the wind comes sweeping down the plain…).  Oklahoma actually is under a wind advisory today.
