Quote of the Day

“I’m not an idiot. If Rupert Murdoch sat me down tomorrow and said, ‘We want to put you on the Fox network in primetime.’ … Well, I’m not stupid.”

Fired CNN host Piers Morgan.

Fox News — perhaps the one place in the world where Piers wouldn’t be the biggest a-hole in the building, not by a long shot.

Quote of the Day

“I don’t think I’ve been abandoned. I think maybe they misunderstood me a little bit.  But I think Fox and I, I think, Hannity and I are just right on. I have no doubt that he would support me if he understood really what’s in my heart. And I think he does understand me.”

Cliven Bundy

Now persona non grata (non Greta?) at Fox News, Bundy has moved to CNN, which apparently has stopped getting ratings on the Malaysian airliner.

“Odds of This Happening to a White Kid Are Just Very Slim”

I haven’t followed the Zimmerman trial closely, but I’m a big fan of Josh Marshall, and I wanted to share this.

From “Trayvon’s Dead Body,” Josh Marshall, Talking Points Memo:

“I didn’t know this until just now. But yesterday MSNBC momentarily aired a courtroom image of Trayvon Martin’s dead body at the crime scene. It was seemingly accidental and they quickly panned away. Our video team saw it but didn’t run it, which was totally the right decision by every standard we’ve always followed. I didn’t see it myself or even know about it until a few moments ago when Gawker ran the image.

“I’m sure it makes me sound a bit naive saying this but I was shocked when I saw it. Of course, I’ve seen dead bodies before. And I’ve seen countless crime scene photos of dead bodies. In terms of who’s guilty and who’s innocent, it is well worth noting just for the record that seeing a dead body is inherently inflammatory and disquieting. It’s not probative at all in terms of determining guilt, which is why there’s usually a lot of jousting in a courtroom about what jurors get exposed to.

“But I wanted to share a personal reaction when I saw it. I felt guilty journalistically that it hasn’t been seen. Not guilty as us, TPM, but guilty in terms of journalism in general. We’re not going to run it because we’ve always had a pretty conservative editorial standard about running images that show gratuitous violence or death, dead bodies, etc. Whatever the merits of that standard, it’s probably not the right decision to depart from it now in this one case at the end of a trial we have not covered closely. And in any case, it’s already published if you want to see it. Before I link to it, seriously, think it over before you click. It’s upsetting. Here it is.

“But back to the image itself. Seeing it, for all the tabloid coverage and endless CNN cable news coverage of the case, a big part of me feels like the real story here has been glossed over. Whatever the ins and outs of the legalities here, the odds of this happening to a white kid are just very slim. I knew that an hour ago. But I’m confronting it in a different way now.”

Just a Little Defensive Over at State

From an email exchange* between Michael Hastings at BuzzFeed and Hillary’s personal spokesman, Philippe Reines.  This is Hastings to Reines:

“From my perspective, the scandal here is that the State Department had such inadequate security procedures in place that four Americans were killed. And then the Ambassador’s diary–and who knows what else–was left behind for anyone to pick up. Thankfully, it was CNN–and not Al Qaeda or some other militia–that found it and was able to return it to the family. That CNN used portions of the material in the diary they found at the scene–material that appears to contradict the official version of events that State/WH has been putting out–is completely in line with practices of good journalism.

“I don’t know how involved Arwa Damon has been in this. But for what it’s worth, Arwa is one of the best war correspondents working today. She’s consistently risked her life to get these stories, and to find out what actually happens in these conflict zones.I do agree that the media has lots of responsibilities, and CNN fulfilled its responsibility by returning the diary while still managing to inform the American public of newsworthy information. So it’s unfortunate that you are trying to make a scapegoat out of CNN. That State was forced to flee Benghazi–again, because of such inadequate security, leaving behind all sorts of sensitive information–tells us more about DoS than CNN.

“The misinformation here seems largely to be coming from State and the administration. The defense that the administration has offered that there was no intelligence warning of an attack is weak. If there was no intel, then clearly the CIA and other intel agents stationed in Benghazi weren’t doing their jobs well. If there was intel, then we have some kind of cover-up–whether out of incompetence or ass covering before the election or just the trauma of losing four good men, it’s hard for me to say at this point.
”

Reines really loses it with Hastings, calling him an “unmitigated asshole,” telling him to “Fuck Off,” and finally advising him that “Inside of 5 minutes when I can log into my desktop, you’ll be designated as Junk Mail.  Have a good life Michael.”

Erick Erickson Shames CNN

On Tuesday night, conservative Erick Erickson, a paid CNN contributor, tweeted: “First night of the Vagina Monologues in Charlotte going as expected.

Lily Ledbetter spoke that night.

Michelle Obama spoke that night.

Tammy Duckworth, who lost both legs and part of her right arm piloting a helicopter struck by a grenade in Iraq, spoke that night.  She is running for Congress in Illinois against Joe “You lie” Walsh.

CNN needs to fire this dick.

Mitt’s Favorables Up

A new CNN poll shows that Mitt’s favorable/unfavorable rating is now 44/43, still low, but about 10 points better than it’s been.  President Obama’s favorables/unfavorables are 56/42.

Moreover, 53% said they will give Mitt a fresh look, a clear Etch a Sketch as it were, with the primaries over.  43% said they know all they need to know about him.  I’m in that 43%.
