If You Had Any Remaining Hope…
If you had any remaining hope that Derek Jeter might get to play in one more post-season, tonight’s 11-3 loss to the Orioles should have crushed that foolish hope once and for all. These Yankees really do suck.
That Time of Year
This morning, for the first time all season, I clicked on “Expanded Standings” at the Yankees web site to see where they are in the Wild Card race. I don’t see it happening for them to win the AL East, where they are now six games back. But only one game in the Wild Card. Actually, I don’t see it happening there either, and if it did, how long would these Yanks last in the playoffs?
You can say that last night’s game, a 4-3 loss in the 12th against the Tigers, was a great effort, especially since David Price was Detroit’s starter. But great efforts don’t count, only W’s and L’s, and it was another L.
Jeter Retiring!
Derek Jeter has announced that this will be his last season playing major league baseball. From his statement:
“And the thing is, I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball.”
Jeter will turn 40 this June.
Yanks Get Tanaka
Some excellent news for the Yankees. They’ve signed 25-year-old Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka for $155 million over seven years.
And we’ll see Tanaka very soon — pitchers and catchers report on February 14. Happy Valentine’s Day, Yankee fans.

A-Rod to Eat at Kids’ Table
If A-Rod makes good on his promise threat to show up at spring training, like the bad fairy in a Brothers Grimm tale, the Yankees don’t have to let him into their major league camp.
Since he’s not on their 40-man roster because of his suspension, they can send him to minor-league camp.
A-Rod Suspended for the Season
A-Rod’s 211-game suspension has been reduced to 162 games — the entire 2014 regular season — plus any post-season games the Yankees might play.
He is planning to sue in federal court — good luck with that!

A-Rod Going, But Not Quietly
A-Rod knows he’s going down, and he wants to see who else he can take with him. He’s filing a medical grievance against the Yankees with MLB and also preparing a medical malpractice suit against team doctor Chris Ahmad, both over an injury to his left hip that was surgically repaired last January. He claims the Yankees knew his hip was injured, but didn’t tell him and had him continue to play, hoping to make the injury worse so that he could never play again and the team would be done with him.
Meanwhile, Brian Cashman’s former mistress, Louise Meanwell (you can’t make this stuff up), is trying to force A-Rod’s new lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, to drop A-Rod because of an alleged conflict of interest because Tacopina’s firm has represented her. She spent time in jail for trying to extort money from Cashman and for stalking him. She also claims that Cashman was aware that some of his players used PED’s and that he gave her names.
It’s a sordid mess that promises to get much darker and dirtier before it ends.
With Anthony Weiner fading, this is a gift from the gods to the NYC tabloids.
Playoff Picture Not That Grim
If the Yankees have a run in them, the remaining schedule certainly helps. Besides the ten games against the Blue Jays, we also play the crappy White Sox, Astros, and Giants. Lots of low-hanging fruit between now and the end of the season.
Embattled Farmers
